Before posting your resume online

April 17, 2008

There are hundreds of sites where you can post your resume online, but before posting your resume online the job seekers should have the clear idea of how they can post their resume what are the benefits they get in online search, and how can they get success from their online job hunt? The following are some of the important considerations for the jobseekers to attain success in their online job search

  • If you don’t have a resume yet, create one as outlined
  • Update your resume so that when you post online it would look better formatted
  • Convert your resume to a text-only document.
  • Update the words and phrases in your resume so that an employer or recruiter doing an online search will find your resume.
  • Many online job portals have what they call a Resume Builder and/or a Paste your Resume section. To fill out that resume builder section, you’ll need to collect your job history, education information, and skills from out of your resume and type them in separately, the name of the company you worked for and start and end date.
  • Keep a Word formatted copy of your resume as many job boards also allow you to upload the .doc version.
  • Create a cover letter that makes more sense to an employer who finds you online.
  • Interested hiring managers will generally ask for a better-formatted resume than what the job board offers them.
  • Customize your resume if your resume is long, you may want to consider preparing multiple specialized resumes for each type of job you would consider.
  • You can’t be specific and talk directly to your new boss by name on a job board, so you should change your cover letter to reflect that. Your cover letter should also be converted to a text-only document
  • There are many online job sites that are specific to an industry.
  • The more job sites you are on, the higher your chances of being found by your future employer.
  • Target the big job portals first and it doesn’t mean that you should completely ignore the smaller boards.

How to choose topic for a website

April 3, 2008

Everyone who are with the interest of creating a website seems to have an idea of selecting the topics. It often seems so simple. “Just come up with a cool idea, build a website, and sell it for millions to Yahoo or Google and you’ll be rich!” If your goal is to create and manage a successful website and make money with it then the simple approach is recommended.

Basic idea

  • It’s not a good idea for a common man to select and opt for the websites like orkut.com, face book and my space because the programming and technical knowledge needed to build and maintain is very costly.
  • These sites look cool on the surface but there are a lot of hidden headaches that the average person does not see.
  • Even if you were going to pay a programmer to create your site, it would cost you thousands of dollars.
  • Not to mention you’d probably need dedicated hosting space, which can cost you hundreds of dollars per month. You can forget the $10/month hosting plans.

For Example if you are interested in preparing desserts. You could create cookery related website where you can offer all your favorite recipes.

You’d create your site and then spend time learning about SEO (search engine optimization) so your pages get found in Google, Yahoo, etc. Then you could make money from Google ads and refer other products that your audience may find interesting.

If your goal is to make money through websites then you should know how important it is for you to select something that holds your interest. Remember, this is going to be a site you will need to update frequently to keep your visitors interested and maintain your traffic levels.

So it’s important that you should select such topics that you know a lot about or at least have some interest in learning more.

The Things to Avoid

The next important thing is to avoid making money with a website initially. This part of making money immediately is a big trap many newcomers fall into. If they can’t decide on a topic they choose the make money online idea since they want to make money themselves. It’s always a bad idea to choose a topic that you have no experience with.

These are all things you must execute well if you want to become successful, and it will not happen overnight. It’s much better to start small and simple with a site like and once the traffic and money starts coming in, then you can expand to something more robust and complex. It will save you a lot of money time and unnecessary headaches. So choosing the topic for a website is crucial and important.
